Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about audiobook narration for teens/young adults

What makes a great voice for teen and young adult audiobooks?
A great YA narrator connects authentically with younger listeners, bringing characters and content to life with energy, emotion, and age-appropriate tone. I focus on telling stories in a way that resonates with teens—whether it's for fast-paced fiction, emotional storytelling, or engaging non-fiction.

How do you adapt your voice for different teen and young adult genres?
Each genre has its own rhythm and tone. For fiction, I craft distinct character voices and capture the story's emotional arc. For non-fiction, I aim for clarity, relatability, and a pace that keeps listeners engaged while learning. I adjust delivery based on genre, age range, and subject matter.

Do young adult listeners prefer a more dramatic or subtle narration style?
It depends on the story and the audience. Some YA novels call for a cinematic feel, while others work best with a natural, conversational approach. I collaborate with authors and producers to strike the right balance for the intended tone and listener age group.

How do you handle sensitive or complex themes in YA audiobooks?
Young adult stories often tackle real-life issues like identity, mental health, or social justice. I treat these topics with care and authenticity, ensuring the narration supports the story’s message without overwhelming the listener.

What age range do you typically narrate for in the young adult category?
I specialize in narrating for middle grade (ages 10–13), teen (13–17), and upper YA (17+). Each age group has its own narrative needs, and I tailor my performance to reflect their experiences, vocabulary, and emotional depth.

What is your rate for narrating teen/young adult audiobooks?

My rate generally depends on the nature of your project (how many words, when your deadline is, and the difficulty in content) but my per-finished-hour (PFH) rate typically starts at $200 PFH.

How quickly can you narrate an audiobook for teens/young adult (YA)?

I have a quick turnaround time and am quick to reply to emails/messages, allowing us to complete projects in a timely manner and keep in touch throughout the process. I'm happy to work within your timeline parameters so we can get your audiobook into your listeners' ears as soon as possible!
